Movies – To See May 15, 2011

Well, I’m hoping this can be my depository for movies I’d like to see.  I kept them in a “Note” on Facebook for the last couple of years, but it gets harder and harder to find as more notes pile over it!  I may post a separate page with movie reviews, though that doesn’t seem likely.  For now, I will keep the little one-or-two-sentence reviews at the bottom of this one as I did on Facebook.

To See:

The Help – this looks both entertaining and “feel good” in the way such movies are meant to be, good-triumphs-over-evil and such.  I would like to know how black people see movies like this, though.  For the “average white American” who watches it without much thinking, I’d assume it’s supposed to let us feel superior, even self-righteous, to watch other people acting racist (I would never act that way!) but getting to identify with the main character as she attempts to break down some of those walls (of course I would do that too if given the chance!)  Yes?  This can be a good thing, in the “practice it mentally as you read/watch/etc and then you’re a little more ready when the opportunity comes up” way of experiencing media; then again, it could merely allow us enjoy the good feelings of vicarious speaking-out-against-wrongs without ever getting off our butts to do anything about injustices that still exist in this world.  (So much for my idea of a single sentence or phrase about each movie!) ;)
